Three Avatar: The Last Airbender animated films are in the works according to an announcement by Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The first movie will be directed by Lauren Montgomery, who has previously worked on the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series and Voltron: The Legendary Defender. The original creators of the Avatar franchise, Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, will produce the upcoming films with Eric Coleman, who also worked on The Last Airbender series as the executive producer and production manager.
Ramsey Naito, the President of Animation & Development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation said the following about the new team consisting of several people who have already worked on Avatar before:
“As original creators, Mike and Bryan expand the Avatar universe with us, we’re keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the forthcoming theatrical.”
Latifa Ouaou, who is the Executive Vice President of Movies and Global Franchises at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation will oversee the development and production of the animated Avatar film, with Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation’s Vice President of Animation Jason McConnell.
Plot and cast details for the new films have not been announced as of yet.
The three films will be developed by Avatar Studios, which is a Nickelodeon division dedicated to creating new series and movies based in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The films will debut on Paramount+, Nickelodeon platforms, and unspecified third-party platforms, as well as in cinemas.
Nickelodeon has also started to lay the groundwork for an “Avatar Airbender universe” that will feature multiple series and movies.
