After creating up a storm in the last two years, DC Fandome won’t be returning for a third time, as Warner Bros. Discovery has cancelled the virtual event.
DC Fandome originally debuted in 2020, as a virtual replacement for all the in-person events like the San Diego Comic-Con that were cancelled due to complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Along with several panels involving comic book artists and writers, the event also saw major reveals from the world of DC Theatrical and TV, as fans got their first looks at films like The Batman, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, The Suicide Squad and more.
While the first event was an outright success, the hype levels simmered down a bit for last year’s panels. Even then, fans had a ton of excitement going into DC Fandome 2021, as they received new looks at Matt Reeves’ take on the Dark Knight, which released a few months later in theatres around the world.
With lockdown restrictions taken down a notch in various countries around the world, in-person events are making a comeback. Earlier this year, San Diego Comic-Con held its first ever in-person show since 2019, and alongside Marvel, DC also made an appearance to showcase Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
In a statement released to Popverse about DC Fandome’s cancellation, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that the studio wishes to focus in future in-person events in order to engage with DC fans.
With the controversy surrounding DC’s live-action future, it makes sense why WBD would want to skip this year’s event, as fans don’t have any idea about the future release slate involving DC characters, and judging by the looks of things, it doesn’t seem like the studio has any major tentpole projects to unveil at an event anytime soon.
